What's Happening on Yerba Buena Island

With such a wet year, exceptional rains yielded an exceptional crop of annual weeds this year. Dry weeds are the tinder and the base of the fuel ladder. In this case on Yerba Buena Island, we removed masses of dry weeds from the roadside, concentrating their seed and uncovering native grasses and wildflowers in the process. Weeds are dragged away from the roadside and forest edge. The pile is folded and compacted so as to concentrate the seed, but foremost to limit its ability to flare up. Unlike evenly spaced standing grass, a compressed pile will be very oxygen limited, and like a dense pile of grass will smolder rather flare up.

The ability for the group to be working simultaneously independently and as a group is one of the strong points of the Habitat Potential work force.
